How To Cook Quinoa

If you are new to cooking quinoa you may find that it can sometimes end up a little bit soggy and tasteless, if so these simple steps should help you create the fluffy quinoa you’ve been dreaming of!

Foolproof quinoa cooking step-by-step instructions

  1. As with all dried foods rinse the quinoa first using a very fine strainer until the water runs clear
  2. Measure out 1 cup of quinoa and place in large saucepan
  3. Measure out 2 cups of water and place in the pan with the quinoa
  4. Bring the water to boil
  5. Once water is boiled, turn down the heat to a low simmer and cover with a lid
  6. Leave the quinoa to cook for 10 minutes – do not stir, leave it alone
  7. When the 10 minutes is up check on how much water is left, you can stir a little at this point– keep an eye on it until the water has completely evaporated- keep the lid on
  8. Remove from heat and fluff up with a fork

Benefits to choosing quinoa: low sugar, low fat, whole food (not processed), a seed (making it Paleo friendly), a complex carbohydrate (keeping you fuller for longer)

My Simple Quinoa Salad Recipe

Serves 4

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of quinoa
  • 1 green bell pepper
  • 1 sweet red pepper
  • 3 spring onions
  • ½ red cabbage
  • ¼ cup of pine nuts
  • ¼ cup of chilli oil
  • Himalayan Rock salt and ground black pepper for seasoning

Directions

  • Prepare 1 cup of quinoa (using the steps above)
  • Thinly slice all the vegetables and mix together in a large bowl
  • Lightly toast the pine nuts in a frying pan for a couple of minutes and then add to the vegetables
  • Add the cooked quinoa to the vegetables
  • Pour over the chilli oil, season with the salt and pepper and stir well – until all is covered in the oil.Serve and enjoy.This can be used as a quick main meal, side dish and eaten cold the next day for a salad lunch.Gluten, dairy and sugar free recipe.
